Betraying America and Losing the War

Bush's approval ratings are sinking, the war in Iraq is costing billions more than even the chicken littles predicted, Asia will need long-term assistance to recover from the tsunami, and still the Bush adminstration is going to spend $50 million on his coronation. These people truly have no shame. In the meantime, people are reeling from news of this adminstration's latest plan to win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people: the Salvador Option. No kidding. They're actually talking about using death squads and kidnappings in a desperate attempt to get things in Iraq under control. Screw the Uniform Code of Military Justice -- perhaps Donald Rumsfeld figures that he didn't need ethics at Abu Ghraib or Gitmo, why should he bother with them in Iraq at all? I predict that Bush's approval ratings will sink even lower, as the fantasy that was carefully constructed for the benefit of the election collapses and people realize how horribly the Bush Administration has screwed up. Like this guy:

I'm ashamed I ever supported this war. And I make heartfelt apologies to those people, like Matthew Yglesias and Kevin Drum, who pointed out that while some kind of military intervention in Iraq was probably necessary (and I believe it was), it could wait until we had a competent Presidential Administration in place. At the time, I dismissed those arguments, confident that the Bush Administration would take their jobs far too seriously to screw it up. Well, I was wrong. And now we have this mess of a war that has made the world less safe, emboldened our enemies, and may wind up costing us our soul.

And for what? Nothing, as far as I can tell. Absolutely nothing.
