Friday Creature

My birdfeeder has become so popular lately that I find myself having to fill it as often as every other day (over the winter, a feeder full would often last a week or more). So, I visited my local birdfeeding shop recently thinking that perhaps a larger feeder would be in order. But then a thistle feeder caught my eye and I thought perhaps that branching out might be more interesting than supplementing. I hadn't seen many goldfinches at that point, and the thistle feeder is supposed to attract them... So, I got one, and the goldfinches did eventually show up, but they don't have any interest in the thistle feeder -- in fact, the thing doesn't seem to attract anyone but the occasional chickadee who flits over when the crowd at the seed feeder gets too heavy...

Anyway, this week's creature is a female goldfinch at the seed feeder, ignoring all the thistle just a few feet away.

BONUS creature! Action shot!

A male goldfinch waits as a female comes in for a landing.

(Don't forget to check out the Friday Ark!)

Thanks, everyone, for the kind words!

Keera, I'm using the FugiFilm FinePix S5000, an earllier version of this camera. Since I don't have any special lenses and the zoom on this camera only goes so far, rather than going to the birds (as South Knox Bubba does so consistently well), I have to get the birds to come to me. Almost all of my bird photos are taken through my living/dining room window. I have my bird feeders positioned very close to the window so I can capture images without a zoom lens.

I wonder if you got some bad thistle seed by chance? I've never seen a goldfinch who doesn't love thistle (nyger) seed!

Maybe so! I'll try a different lot.

BTW, I checked out your web site -- beautiful photos!!!!!
