Sorry about another late Friday Creature post, but I was out of town for the weekend. In my rush to get out of dodge I didn't put anything up before I left on Friday, but I figured I could post a picture when I arrived at my destination. I didn't discover until I got there that we were staying in a -- gasp! -- internet-free zone. I had a wonderful weekend, though, and took lots of photos, including this one of a (I think) great horned owl. I got to see part of the park's rescued birds-of-prey presentation yesterday, and caught this guy as his handler held him up in front a bright, sunny window. Other creatures have been filling up the ark all weekend! I hope you had a good one!

Wow. Alice the owl is awesome. What a great picture.
We have a Great Horned (pair?) that lives in the woods behind our house. I often get to hear the call if I'm awake between 3-5 a.m. (and often the little boy makes sure than I am). It's an amazing sound.
Apparently if you have a pair, you can sometimes hear differences in pitch when the male and female call together.
