Congress Does Something Right

Check this out! This past week, the Senate actually stood up Bush on the issue of funding the Occupation of Iraq (via CoJP):
The U.S. Senate voted unanimously on Wednesday to force President George W. Bush to submit a budget for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars instead of financing them in emergency bills that are pushed through Congress with minimal scrutiny.

As Congress prepared to pass an emergency bill with $65.8 billion the Pentagon urgently wanted for the wars, the Senate voted 98-0 to end the practice and make the administration lay out the wars' expected costs in its annual budget submitted to Congress in February.
On the down side, though, the cost of the occupation is quickly adding to the already massive financial headache that the Borrow-and-Spend Republicans are foisting off on future generations.
Including the latest emergency bill, the wars' cost will reach $420 billion, said Sen. John McCain, an Arizona Republican who sponsored the amendment.
$420 billion is a far cry from Bush's original estimate of $50 billion (one of many examples of this administration's staggering incompetence), and there is no end in sight...

I don't know if this has got anything to do with it or not, but I heard that interest rates on student loans are going up. First time it's happened since I graduated in 1995 so I can't help but wonder.

This country is so screwed up, where would a person even begin if they were going to write a book about it?

I seem to recall Wolfowitz or someone equally sinister saying the war would cost practically nothing, that Iraqi oil revenues would pay to stabilize and rebuild the country. Speaking of oil revenues, we are not just paying for this war through the Treasury and borrowing, but also with billions at the gas pump, allowing the oil companies to claim instability in the Middle East while they gorge themselves with insane profits.
