Here in the US, I think if we put out minds to it, we could ban the bag without killing too many trees. I've noticed that most local groceries are selling reusable canvas bags. If they were to take it a step further -- if they stopped using plastic and started charging for paper, I would imagine people would, out of necessity, quickly get used to bringing their bags back every time they visit the store.
