Turkey Travelogue: Ephesus

Continuing on with our adventures in Turkey, our next stop was Ephesus (Iona), the most elaborate of the ruins we visited.

This first picture shows actual pipes from the city's ancient plumbing in the foreground, with the great Roman theater in the background.

The theater again.

Beautiful figures on columns.

Gorgeous tiled floors.

And again, we found more multi-seat potties.

The terrace houses are in the process of being excavated, and we got to look around at what they've uncovered so far.

The ancient artwork was incredible.

And there were quite a number of beautiful mosaics.

The Celsus Library.

At one time, this road's end was at the harbor. But the river silt filled the harbor, ever moving it outward to the point where this spot is now about 3 miles inland.

Here's one last peak at the theater.

Too bad the Roman Empire fell. I'd like to observe some remote village or town of people still living this way, sort of like the natives in South America or Australia.

And I really would like to know what's on the other side of those potty holes... bottomless pits?

Beautiful and interesting. Do ya suppose that someday somebody will be looking at remnants of the USA?

As beautiful as the ruins are, imagine what these places looked like in their prime. Thanks for the pics.

I loved Ephesus -- it was one of those place where you can only say, "Oh, my God." Imagining it in its heyday is amazing. I wish I could go back.

Wow! It hasn't occured to me before that the Roman Empire wasn't just vast and mighty, but also colorful and beautiful.

June, aren't we looking at the remnants already? >:->
