Pi Day!
I walked around the corner to the post office this morning and noticed the blossoms have started to come out on my neighbor's tree! So Pi Day has brought us blossoms, blue skies, and beams of sunlight.
Next up: some warmer weather, perhaps? The weekend forecast is looking mighty nice if you're in this part of the world!
Happy Day, everyone!! :-D

Friday Food Photo
This was the lunchbox special today at Sweet Basil, a local Thai restaurant my friend Jason and I like to visit as often as possible. Tofu and veggie soup, curry, cucumber salad and sushi. It was a delicious meal with a great friend, and he hooked me up with my very own iPad! How awesome is that? (I should be posting from it, but I'm not, as G-Dog is playing with it at the moment...)
Have a great weekend, everyone!! We are unexpectedly hoping for some weekend rain here -- normally that's the last thing we'd want, but everything outside has an unbelievably thick coating of pollen, and everyone inside is sneezing and coughing (or seeking relief at the pharmacy). We've gotten a little bit of rain so far, but only enough to create some yellow puddles, not enough to wash it all away.
A-choo. 'Scuze me while I reach for the neti pot.

Autumn Scenes
In a swirl of wind and bluster, yesterday's rain managed to knock the first few leaves out of the trees. I imagine now that the cold has arrived, the rest will follow in a flurry of fall color. You can see the beginnings of it here, in the view from an upstairs window at home during the rain:
Also, you'll be relieved to know that despite the newly-arrived winter's hardships, Nonnie is managing to keep warm:

Summer's End
Well, it's been a very busy weekend filled with social events and racing about trying to squeeze the last bits of summer fun out of the weekend before the wet weather descends on us later today. I went out for a walk with the dog this morning, followed by a bike ride to the Chattanooga Market with G-Dog, and now I'm showered, fed, and looking forward to hunkering down for the afternoon, watching the storm roll in.
I might even get to spend a bit of time tinkering around with our latest project. We recently suffered the loss of an old workhorse of a laptop (a little MacBook that dated back to the early part of this century). It was the computer that we used, in combination with an external hard drive, to serve our music collection for a number of years.
Instead of replacing it with another mac, we got a Synology DiskStation along with a couple of terabytes of internal storage, and are now properly serving up our music so that we can not only listen at home, but we also have all 20,783 songs (at last count) available to us wherever there is either wifi or cell phone service. It's like having the biggest iPod ever!! I'm so excited. ;-)
The box is also going to work with Time Machine to do continuous backups of our computers, and we're still working on getting that part set up. That might end up being our rainy day project for the rest of the long weekend.
From drought to flood, from blisteringly hot to pleasantly cool, and from unusually quiet to surrounded by music -- all transitions we're making this weekend. Whew.
Autumn, though bittersweet, you bring us quite some relief.

Tlaloc and Tefnut got busy!
I hope this won't get filed in the category of "be careful what you wish for." The other day, I was whining about the weather. Since then, two hurricanes have formed on the US east coast and one of them looks poised to give the Tennessee Valley a drenching. Perhaps a bit more than our parched earth can handle:
Have a happy Labor Day, everyone! We'll be spending ours inside. But along with the precipitation, we'll also be seeing some dramatically lower temperatures, so even if our holiday gets rained out, we will still get to enjoy some cooler air. I might even open a window for the first time since... oh, say... May?!? :-D

MLK, Jr. Memorial
Yesterday was the opening of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The dedication is coming up on Sunday (and Aretha will be there -- one waits in breathless anticipation to see what she will have perched on her head!). Here some more factoids about the memorial. While I work on getting to DC myself, I'll look forward to hearing a report from someone who's been there.
Update (Thursday evening): The foundation building the new memorial to Martin Luther King Jr. on the National Mall said the dedication has been postponed due to Hurricane Irene, according to the Associated Press. Executive architect Ed Jackson Jr. told the AP in a statement that no new date has been set for the dedication originally planned for Sunday (more info).

Friday Creature
Whew! I'm glad this week is coming to a close. We had some very strong storms roll through Chattanooga on Wednesday, unleashing wind, hail, rain and multiple tornadoes all over the region. A lot of people are still without power, the death toll continues to climb, and there is so much cleaning up to do. I'm feeling very lucky at the moment, as our house was not damaged, our power was only out for a little while, and no one here at Chez 10K was hurt.
And now that the weekend is almost here, Nonnie and I will start looking forward to our Sunday walk, which has become a regular weekly event since the warmer weather returned. Instead of going to church in the morning, we choose to glory in creation by doing some urban hiking. It takes an hour or two, depending on our destination, and we usually cover at least three miles (one week we had a bit of a directional problem and ended up walking over seven miles!). This photo is from a few weeks ago, snapped when we stopped in a shady spot for a quick drink of water.
Have a great weekend, everyone! More creatures can be found on the modulator's ark! Be safe, happy and well!

Friday Creature
We have had a wonderful week of snow that G-Dog calls his "snowbatical" because the university here was supposed to start back up this past Monday, but instead, he got the week off because of the weather. Everyone saw it coming and since we love a good snow day, Emmie came over after finishing up on Sunday and we all hunkered down, waiting for the snow. A lot fell overnight, and the temps haven't gotten above freezing since, so it's all still out there. Emmie eventually had to go back to work, but before she left, we took one last long walk in the snow and along the way, we ran into this very righteous dog named Otis. He loves the snow (as you might guess from his appearance). Roll a snowball his way and he will pounce like he's found a mouse.
(The Modulator is still on a travel break, so no link for this week.)

Scary weekend!
As the snow continues to fly in the northeast and the cleanup beings in Chile, we're still waiting to hear where the tsunami might hit (evacuations have begun)...

Friday Creature
Bah. This is the winter that wouldn't end!! I can't remember there ever being this long a stretch of cold, dreary weather. But I've got shore birds and I'm putting them up! How's that for a ray of sunshine?!? I've got a lot of them, so go ahead and settle in for a few months of Fridays from the coast of Florida.
I was down there for a few weeks in January and I arrived along with a blast of arctic air. It doesn't freeze down there very often, so when it does, wackiness ensues. Iguanas fall out of trees, farmers soak their citrus trees and strawberries, and frozen fish wash up on the beach. Lots and lots of dead fish. I got out every day -- either on my bike or for a run -- in my little corner of the Tampa Bay, which usually found me going back and forth along the causeway between Bradenton and Anna Maria Island. Eventually, a small municipal army poured out of trucks onto the beaches to clean up the fishkill, but initially the work was done by the buzzards. There were so many enjoying an incredibly sumptuous buffet of fish.
They aren't the most gregarious birds in the world, at least when it comes to people, so it was challenging to get photos of them. But I did manage to get a few, and since this is the bird that greeted me at the beginning of my trip, I'll start of my series of 2010 Florida shore birds with this turkey vulture.
Have a great weekend, everyone! Stay safe and warm and dry, and try not to let the weather get you down. Eventually, spring will get here. And in the meantime, don't forget to check the Ark!
