This is just wrong

If I wanted to run something as horrible as Windows, I wouldn't have an elegant, beautifully designed Mac!

I'll probably hit a nerve here, but to me it sounds like proof that the "software gap" is not yet near to being closed. Else why would anyone bother with this?

I'm still heading for a Mac as my next purchase.

Nah -- Joe, there's no nerve there anymore (there used to be, back when I knew I was right, but nobody would listen ;-) ...but lately, it seems like everyone's switching!). I don't understand the software gap thing anymore, though. I can see why gamers stubbornly stick to windows boxes, but we've got the rest of the applications covered on the mac, no problem. Hell, we used to have a bit of trouble with M$Office docs, but now between applications like AbiWord and NeoOffice, we've got those covered and the software's free!

I was an early convert, though. I used DOS machines back in the 80s, but I quickly switched to the Mac before I had to deal with the nightmare that was to become windows. Not only is the OS much better, but the design is clearly superior and it all just works. Well.

(Sorry Glen, I admire the whole Linux thing, but it's too much damn work. With the mac, I just plug in and go. I already spend too much time at the computer as it is. And the mac is the best of all worlds -- if I ever do need to go to unix, it's right there.)

Alice,

Ubuntu is not your dad's oldsmobile(older command-line only, no graphical user interface linux). The only work is 5 minutes worth of install. Send me an Address and let me at least send you a live cd to run on your mac. It will not install anything on the harddrive, it just runs out of the cd. (a bit slower but you get a test drive.) If you are not sold at with it , then no harm done you can give it to someone else or throw it away.

Yes, I think Ubuntu linux is that user friendly!

Best regards,

Glen

Thanks, Glen, for the offer. I've got an Ubuntu disk that a friend gave me, but I'm quite happy with my mac as it is for the time being. :-)

Actually, I wouldn't mind a dual boot Mac. Imagine finally being able to use some Windows-only software (f.ex. I could never find certain astrological software for the Mac), or being able to tweak web pages in the Windows version of Internet Explorer - all on a Mac running Windows directly, rather than via Virtual PC (ugh). A white or metal, gracefully styled Mac. I so totally understand the Windows partition in this joke: http://www.geekculture.com/joyoftech/joyarchives/809.html
