Oh, this is awful news. I had a fondness for Vince's singing, playing, and songwriting. To the chagrin of many of my fellow audience members, I really did like what was probably his best-known song with the Dead, "Samba in the Rain." The harmonic progressions and the groove appeal to me, however "unorthodox" they may be.
I think I'll have to finally get around to recording my own version of it, as a kind (of) tribute.
Oh, yeah -- I have some very fond memories of Vince's various contributions to the music world. I think the first time I heard him was when my brother brought home a Tubes album and then proceeded to play it so many times that the music got stuck in everyone's heads -- we even caught my mother humming "White Punks on Dope" to herself one day...
i am still in complete shock and can't kick this sadness. Vince was a brother in arms and a friend.I cant understand how someone so kind, talented, positive & fun to hang out with could hurt himself & so many others around the world. He was very generous with his time & energy. I'll always hear his amazing keyboard style in my head. "High Everybody !!!" His nightly greeting he started the shows with.
FUCK !!!! It's been difficult to play & sing this week. People ask me "how'd he do it?". Out of respect for Vince, his family, friends & fellow musicians......I dont want to know. It wouldn't change the end result. I find some comfort in reading posts from others who feel the same hurt & confusion.

Thanks for passing this on..
Man, that is bad.
I dug his stuff with the Tubes, too, and he played on a couple of not-half-bad Todd Rundgren albums, too.
