Welcome to America's own theocracy. (And people worried about Kennedy turning this country into a Catholic state!) Pensito Review has more (along with a tongue and a cheek):
UPDATE: Bush is such a cowardly little weasel. How much you want to bet he hasn't a clue what's at stake? He got his orders, and he's following them a like a good little theocrat, unaware of how many lives could be saved and how much suffering could be alleviated by the research he ignorantly opposes.
President George Bush today vetoed a bipartisan bill that sought to expand the limitations currently imposed on human stem cell research purportedly based on his religious beliefs. It was Bush's first veto of a congressional bill in the five-and-a-half years of his presidency.... and AmericaBlog:
Bush thinks his stubbornness appeals to his base. Once again, he's showing the theocrats determine his policy and his politics. Bush is building quite a death toll from his Presidency.... and just in case you forgot what an intelligent, independent, thoughtful president sounds like, here's a Kennedy quote to give you the warm fuzzies over the good ole days:
"I am not the Catholic candidate for President. I am the Democratic Party's candidate for President who also happens to be a Catholic. I do not speak for my Church on public matters—and the Church does not speak for me."
Our present federally approved embryonic stem cell lines are aging and contaminated. They're rapidly losing what little scientific value they had in the first place. Much research has been slowed to a crawl or stopped completely because of the peculiar ideological beliefs of a single man: George Bush. This despite the fact that the new, bipartisan legislation proposed in the House and Senate is supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans from both parties. If and when the day comes that a cute kid stands up and walks away from his wheelchair for good, the President and the right-wing culture of death are going to appear about as appealing as the theocrats who imprisoned Galileo.

Well, this science is taking place just not in the United States. We are at risk of losing what has made our nation great in 200 years: our creative and innovative thinkers. Our researchers and scientists will move to the countries that advance and value medical research. The oppurtunity to help people and make hideous diseases and conditions obsolete will make other nations rich and respected. Bush has harmed our country in so many ways.
Oh yes, and think about those waiting for organ transplants, like a liver, stem cell research is now being done so one can grow new tissues This can only be done with the blastocyst stem cell research not the adult or umbilical cord stem cells.
