Powerful photo. Chattanooga's National Cemetery is a must -see for everyone. It was created after the Battle of Chattanooga (Orchard Knob, Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain) left thousands dead. The bodies were piled up at the railroad station (adjacent to the Cemetery) so General Thomas requisitioned the land to bury them.
When a chaplain asked the General, if he should organize the Fallen by the States like it is at Gettysburg, Thomas said no. He wanted them mixed up because he was sick of State's rights.
The impact of the Civil War all the way through to today's wars makes this hallowed ground a must -see place for visitors. It gives an understanding of Chattanooga and why our town is unique and special. It also reminds us of the sacrifices so many have made for our country.
I didn't get to Signal when I visited last Spring...just Lookout. Lots of Civil War history to delve into next time! An aside: where's that subway picture from? Nooga doesn't have one, does it? I think I would have noticed :-)
Thanks for the info, Sandy! I pop by the National Cemetery quite often, since it's so close by. They're currently working on acquiring some adjacent property for expansion (I think they're eyeing the tract to the south of the current property).
June, you're right -- there's no subway here in Chattanooga (wah!). That photo is one I snapped in underground Madrid last summer.
