A bit of searching leads me to conclude that this definitely a "writing spider" (so named due to an extra row of X's seen in the web), a member of the family Argiope. It closely resembles Argiope aurantia but both body shape, coloring and number of dots are off.

Colorful! That spider looks like it's trying to mimic a caterpillar and plant stems. What kind of spider is it and what is it afeared of?
I have no idea! I wish I knew more about spiders -- I never got farther than "black ones scare me." They're pretty cool creatures.
