ANTS!!

I have never seen so many ants in such a small space in my life. Those little sugar ants. At least a gazillion dexabillion of them.

We've got a box screwed to side of our fence that remotely operates the gate that sits between our carport and the road. Last week it started to respond poorly to entreaties from our remote transmitter to open and/or close. We've been through this at least once before, so I knew to go get a new power cell for the thing (which, btw, is the size of a car battery!). I replaced it, tried out all the transmitters, and everything was working great. Job well done.

Yesterday, after a couple of days when no one drove the cars, and therefore, no one used the gate, I got in the car, hit the button and... nothing happened (hrmmm... like in a Colin Hay song...). Tried a different remote. Nothing. Tried all the different remotes (for some reason, we have six of them). Zip. Nada. Zero. Zilch. Nix. Squat.

Well, I didn't have time to deal with it yesterday. Actually, I didn't have time to deal with it today, either, but I tackled the job anyway. At least the weather was nice, and tomorrow it might rain (as it turned out, it's raining now, as I type this), so I figured I better get on it while the gettin's good.

First, I cut off all the power to the whole unit, and then opened it up and rather quickly noticed that there were some ants in there that hadn't been there the other day. A lot of ants.

But even then, I had no idea how many were really there. My little project was about to become a scene from a horror movie.

First I pulled the receiver off the back wall inside the unit. It's a little box with a circuit board inside that's attached by coax to the antenna on the outside of the larger unit. I opened up that little box and ants spilled out all over the place. It was like an ant bomb had exploded in my hands. BOOM. I wish I had had the time and presence of mind to take a picture.

I sprayed the box out with compressed air, but the ants kept reappearing. I'd blow them to oblivion, but there would still be more of them. Over and over again.

Instead of playing a long whack-a-mole game with these little beasts, I found a tiny screwdriver to take out the tiny screw that held the circuit board onto the back of the box and... wow. There were even more ants under that thing than there had been on top of it. Damn.

I kept blasting the thing with more compressed air, and at this point, I also started spraying peppermint oil on everything that wasn't electronic and/or sensitive circuits (I've had good luck with it in the past with regard to deterring sugar ants), hoping that the receiver might still be salvageable.

Before starting to reassemble it all, I tried to make sure that there weren't all that many ants left in the unit. But I kept finding more of them. And more and more. I checked the cables leading up to the unit from the fence and the ground, but the peppermint oil that was coating them seemed to be keeping away any return visitors. That there were no ants on the fence. So, where were all these ants I was still seeing coming from?

Then I lifted up the battery. OMFG. This was the biggest colony of ants yet. A magillion kadrillion bazillion ants. The Manila of ant encampments.

Long-story-not-quite-so-long, I'm out of compressed air, there are a lot of dead and dislocated ants out there, the fence around the box is now saturated in peppermint oil, and the ground below the fence is buried in borax. But with the ants banished from the operator unit, lo and behold, the receiver works again! I'll have to keep a watchful eye on the situation, and maybe reapply the peppermint oil and borax after the rain, but hopefully I've taken that battlefield back from the ants for good.

But still I wonder... how is it possible for that many ants to have assembled in just three days?!? There were none, I am sure, when I put that new battery in on Monday afternoon. Then, BOOM. So many ants.

And now, several hours, a 2-mile run and a shower later, I still feel creepy crawlies on my skin. And I'm afraid I may dream about bugs tonight.

But at least tomorrow is the weekend. An end to a very long and difficult week.

I hate ants.

Monday Creature

So, I found this spider recently. In my house. Right next to my naked foot. What would you have done?

A non-Friday Creature

I recently discovered this neighbor setting up housekeeping just outside my back door, between the tomatoes and the roses. Seems like a harmless sort (check out the smiling belly!), but I don't know my spiders all that well...

(ps. there is no ark this week!)

Friday Creature

Happy Friday, everyone. Are you afeared of the spiders? If so, sorry... but have a wonderful weekend!!!

Check out the creatures on the ark as always, and be safe, healthy and cool! Hugs!!

Friday Creature

Word on the street is that spring will be coming around to tease us again this weekend. Which is fine with me -- I'm so tired of being cold all the time! So here's an offering to the weather gods: a bee buzzing around in last summer's warm sunshine.

Check the Friday Ark for more critters, and have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Friday Creature

Welcome to the weekend, everyone! In honor of the goundhog promising us an early spring this year, I bring you this lovely butterfly. I wish the warmer weather was here already, but in the meantime, stay safe, warm and happy! Oh, and the Ark is back after an extended travel break, so take a minute at some point to pop over and see what's new!

Friday Creature

Happy Black Friday/Buy Nothing Day! We spent half the day cooking yesterday, and then the rest of the day recovering from our meal (for the record... turkey breast, oyster stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, green beans, broccoli corn bake, cheddar bay biscuits, mandarin oranges, pumpkin bread, and a peppy beaujolais nouveau). After the requisite perambulations and siestas, we settled into some game-playing, and look at who landed on our scrabble board! Other post-harvest fest creatures can be found on today's (likely overfed) Friday Ark! Have a great weekend, everyone!

Friday Creature

Toward the end of the summer (which wasn't all that long ago here in Tennessee!), my friend Jason and I took a walk through the grounds at the Tennessee Aquarium after having lunch downtown. I'm used to seeing butterflies inside (there's a great exhibit at the top of the Ocean Journey building), but I didn't know they also had some butterfly gardens outside, which is where we saw this lovely specimen. (Is it just me, or did it alight on what looks to be a lego flower?)

Have a great weekend, everyone! We're hoping to get the yard raked of all its leaves on Saturday before some rain moves into the area on Sunday. In the meantime, in addition to enjoying your regular weekly variety of creatures on the modulator's ark, check out Optus Whale Song, a very clever ad released last spring by a telecommunications company in Australia (if you've got broadband, make sure you opt for the larger format!).

Friday Creature

Well, keep your fingers crossed, folks! If the forecast holds, this will be the first weekend this month in which we will not be socked in by the rain. Hopefully, we'll finally get to start getting the yard cleaned up...

In the meantime, look who flew into my flower photo (and check out the other creatures on the ark)! Have a great weekend!

Friday Creature

Even though I took this picture, I don't really believe these bugs exist. They're just too weird. Their parts don't fit with each other -- like the sad little platypus and all the other poorly assembled creatures that got rushed into production before they were ready.

Enjoy the Superbowl, everyone (go Pittsburgh!) and have a great weekend (happy Annie's birthday, too!)! The ark is teeming with critters, as always!

Friday Creature

Welcome to the weekend, folks! Here's a moth I found on a doorstep as I was walking downtown earlier in the fall. Not to be too judgmental about the whole camouflage strategy, but it seems to me that the illusion of eyes loses some of its threat potential if there are more then two of them (it kind of gives away the whole ruse, doesn't it?). But maybe I misunderstand the point of the illusion, or maybe as Emmie suggests, the moth is counting on really dumb predators...

Anyway, there are more creatures on the ark and a Friday to sink into, so be safe and happy and have a relaxing weekend!

Friday Creature

They're creepy and they're kooky... mysterious and spooky... they're altogether ookie...

Just in time for Halloween, some spiders have made themselves known to me this week. I noticed this first one just a few minutes ago as I was headed downstairs to have some lunch. It's up there as I type, hanging in the doorway of Emmie's bathroom and while it's not quite as huge as this image implies (its body isn't more than an inch long), it is an intimidating (though hopefully harmless? ...anyone?) critter.

I found this second one at the beginning of the week as we were bringing the plants inside for the night (the temperature actually dipped below freezing here! Yay! Take that, you stupid aphids!). I carried a stack of ceramic saucers into the house and as I spread them out on the floor, I noticed a black spider in one of them. Now, I don't know much about spiders, but have have this vague idea that black ones are not good. So, I carried it back outside and watched it as it crept carefully away.

Can you see that little red spot on its belly? I didn't notice it until the spider lowered itself to the ground, and then I realized just what kind of spider I had just kicked out of my house. {{{shudder}}}

It didn't occur to me until it was gone that I maybe should have squished it on the sidewalk...

Have a happy Halloween, everyone! Have fun and, as always, take a few moments to check out the creatures on this week's ark!

Friday Creature

I took this photo at the Chattanooga Market earlier this summer. I decided to put it up this week after running across this article about clothianidin and colony collapse disorder -- is there a connection?

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone! Give the arkettes a peek when you have a chance!

Friday Creature

I popped by Crabtree Farms this week, and caught this guy, hard at work. Lately, with all the bad news about bees, I'm always glad to see the few that are left.

Have you got the Olympics Fever yet?!? I'm pretty psyched -- I've loved watching the games since I was a kid -- but I'm going to make a quick trip out of town for a wedding before I can sink into the coverage. Have a great weekend (and go say hello to the arkettes!)!

Friday Creature

Back in the present (or at least recent history), a bunch of bugs like this one invaded our yard this past week. One day I walked out back and there were dozens of what I think were figeater beetles flying around a foot or three off the ground. It was very disconcerting to watch because they look a lot like bees but they careened about without regard to what they might run into -- kind of like drunken bees, I guess. Anyway, a few days later, they disappeared just as suddenly as they had arrived.

In other news, today brings us the 200th edition of the Modulator's Friday Ark! Wow! Congrats, Steve & Co.!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Friday Creature

I'm going to do a cleanup post this week and give you all the creatures I have left from my trip (I'm also going to make a push to finish up my travelogue in the next few days). So here are the bugs, reptiles, amphibians and fish of Turkey...

Happy Independence Day! Have a safe and happy holiday weekend (go say hi to this week's critters when you can!)!

Friday Creature

Another soldier of spring marches onward.

Have a wonderful weekend, folks! You will find many other creatures on the the Modulator's Friday Ark!

Friday Creature

It is spring, and this bee on a dandelion proves it. I took this photo just a few days ago while Nonnie and I were out cruising the neighborhood.

I'm blowing out of town for the weekend, so it might be quiet here for a few days (hopefully, the news will take a break for the holiday as well!). Be chill, happy, enjoy your holiday and be safe! (More Good Friday creatures await on the ark!)

Friday Creature

My creature this week is not in very good shape, so if you want to see something more animated, check out the critters on the friday ark!

Now, on with the creature...

Don't you just hate it when you're in the shower, suds in hair, and you happen to glance up at your shampoo bottle...

... and realize that you're washing your hair in bug cooties? Ew. I doubt this is what Alberto VO5 was referring to with their "new!" decal.
