I wish I knew what kind of spider it is, but alas, I'm not hip to arachnid IDs. My knowledge basically consists of this: if it's black and red, kill it. If it's brown and has a fiddle on its back, kill it. Everyone else is ok.
Which is probably inaccurate, but that's a problem I'm willing to push into the future... ;-)
I'm gonna go with marbled orb weaver, especially if it was yellow on the other side - and because I think that is such a pretty name for any critter: Marbled orb weaver.
