Bag it?

I had to do some shopping today, and at every store I visited, I told them to skip the bag. If it was little, I shoved it in my purse. If it was big, I just carried it to the car. If I needed it, I could have grabbed a canvas bag out of the car, but I didn't buy much at any single store. It felt good to get home without any more of those ubiquitous little scourges.

Bag It: is your life too plastic?

What you should really shove in your purse is a nylon bag that folds into a tiny pouch. :-) That's what I always have with me to gather up the miscellany. Of course, where I live, it rains so much, the plastic is often necessary. But I'll use just one bag, if I can, if I stop at several shops.

Plastic bags are so hard to get rid of. I can't find any place around here that recycles them, and even if I could, I'm pretty sure you can't just melt them down and build them into something else the way you can with #2 bottles.

Keera, I wish I did more shopping without my car, but as it is, just keeping some canvas bags in the car is enough. Perhaps eventually, this old southern city will edge its way closer to being car-free. (ps. What did people who live in rainy climates do before the plastic bag?)

Zev, thanks for visiting! That's exactly why I try to avoid getting stuck with them.

Wax paper or oilskin cloth. That's what they used in the old days to keep things and people dry. It's rather interesting to learn why, for example, polishing leather boots to a high shine is so important in the military: It actually helps make the leather more waterproof.

That IS interesting! Military leaders learned early on that dry feet are a major key to having healthy soldiers.

In catching up on my own reading, I came across this very appropriate XKCD comic - and I wholeheartedly agree with every bit of it (including the hidden comment when you mouse over). http://xkcd.com/990/.
