Weekend Links

There's an awful lot of weird weather out there this weekend, so I gather a lot of folks are trapped in their homes.

Now first of all, that's no reason to sit in front of the computer all day! Get up and move around, people! If you don't use it, you'll lose it. I don't want to hear any excuses! ;-D

And second, as long as you're sitting at the computer anyway (for a quick break between your Jack Lalannes and your Jane Fondas, right?), here are a few tidbits for your amusement...

What’s the worst snow storm you can remember? (Mine is the Blizzard of '77.)

Is Coca-Cola saving the earth?

• Can you possibly resist a list that has in its #2 position, "Oreo Cookie Death Filling?" It's the 6 Weirdest, Scariest Processed Foods!

• If you're in the mood to experiment, Google released beta versions of their Chrome browser for the Mac and Linux this week! (Speaking of Google, have you seen google goggles yet? It's one of the many cool things that has me lusting after the Droid way more than the iPhone these days.)

• Is it the gift that keeps on giving? Or the gift that keeps taking away?

Gretchen Carlson is an idiot. On purpose (jon stewart clip!).

Eww (this is why you're supposed to use your elbow to cover your cough or sneeze, as I recently learned from my sister-in-law, the elementary school teacher).

Brands that will disappear in 2010.

• Can you drive a stick? I've never driven anything but, to the point where trying to drive an automatic freaks me out. Plus, transmissions cost a whole lot of money to fix, but clutches don't cost much, so maintaining cars with manual transmissions can be quite a bit cheaper.

Toilet Graffiti... my favorites are #7 and #8.

What's your logon to Google Reader so I can read that Coca Cola link? ;-)

Re Oreos: I discovered by accident that trans fat gives me an upset stomach. Which explains why I can't eat Oreos any more. Just as well.

Google Chrome: Oh. My. God. It's so FAST! I think something has finally come along to make me give up Safari. The way Chrome handles tabs etc. and looks suits me.

Re: coke... omg! Did I really do that? Senior moment? Whatever, I fixed the link! Thanks so much for the headsup!

Re: oreos... I can see why some people want them banned. I was at an event recently where oreos were available as part of a buffet and I saw a kid come out with a stack of them on his plate. He carefully pulled them apart, ate the filling and then threw away the cookies. He ate the insides of 4 or 5 oreos that way. Ew.

Re: chrome... I think I'm going to download it and give it a test run today. Yesterday, I was busy doing some cooking for a party last night, but today is wet and dreary and the fridge is full of leftovers, so I'm staying inside -- but out of the kitchen!

Coca-Cola is a tough call. It's good that the company is helping to preserve clean water, but its reasons for doing so are not sustainable.

It's the filling that make the dark cookie in Oreos edible. I guess some people like only the filling. I don't find the idea ew-y since I used to pull the cookies apart, too. I mean, that is the ultimate way to eat them. :-)

Chrome in beta for Mac has some serious lacks, one of which is the ability to edit bookmarks. It can't replace any of my other browsers yet, but it's certainly worth testing.

Decision made re Coca-Cola and similar companies. Digg's twitter-feed gave me this: http://www.onlineeducation.net/bottled_water/

Wow! Great link!

I don't buy bottled water anymore. I have one of these and have even taken it on road trips and just refilled it at convenience stores along the way. I still need to remember to take it with me when I eat out, though -- some eateries don't do tap water (especially deli-type restaurants), shockingly enough (or maybe it's not shocking, since there can be a mark-up on bottled water).

I downloaded chrome this afternoon and it looks very promising. I gotta have Google Gears, though, so I'll let it sit on the back burner until it comes out of beta -- that's a deal breaker! :-)

I need a quick and easy Google Reader tutorial. I am not doing as well learning from the computer screen recently as I did before. I don't know if it is photophobia or just exhaustion.

Alice, what do you use Google Gears for? I've read the description and feel paranoid rather than curious. :-/

Well, the main thing is for keeping my computer synched with Google so that even if I'm offline, I can still look at my saved mail, docs, calendar, contacts, bookmarks and such. But there's also a nice Google Toolbar for Firefox that uses Gears and I've grown attached to that as well.

Julie just told me about fruux, which replaces a lot of what MobileMe does. I don't use other Google products besides Gmail.
