Quote of the Day

“This guy, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, I mean, he claims victory and he is very unpopular…And the danger politically of this, he could ruin the political career of his brother, Jeb Ahmadinejad. You got to be careful.”
— David Letterman, discussing the Iran election during a monologue

Welcome to Mike Huckabee's American Theocracy!

This is one of scarier things I've seen so far in this campaign:

There can be no mistaking what Mike Huckabee is calling for when he says he wants to change the constitution so that it conforms to "the word of the living God":
the·oc·ra·cy  (thē-ŏk'rə-sē)
[thee-ok-ruh-see] –noun, plural -cies.

1. a form of government in which God or a deity is recognized as the supreme civil ruler, the God's or deity's laws being interpreted by the ecclesiastical authorities.

2. a system of government by priests claiming a divine commission.

3. a commonwealth or state under such a form or system of government.

Origin: 1615–25; < Gk theokratía.

—Related forms
the·o·crat·ic
the·o·crat·i·cal, adjective,
the·o·crat·i·cal·ly, adverb
If Mike Huckabee were to get his way, we would certainly be in exceptional company. Other theocracies in the world include Iran, Saudi Arabia and The Vatican!

Bush's Press Conference

Oh, dear. Bush says that the fact that Iran has abandoned their nuclear weapons program is a "warning signal," because they might start it up again.

WHAT!?!?!

So, it doesn't matter what Iran does. They're damned no matter what. (Which, of course, is the point, isn't it?)
The story now is that they're no longer pursuing weapons, but they are pursuing weapons knowledge, which Bush thinks (or wants us to think) is just as scary (by now, we're all quite familiar with how much this administration disdains and fears knowledge).

The press tried to hit Bush on his credibility issues and Bush had no answer for them. How could he? He's lied to us, and everyone knows it. In fact, it would appear that he lied during this very press conference, when he claimed that he wasn't briefed about the NIE until last week, which in itself was an incredibly alarming admission of ignorance -- thank goodness it's not true (link via AmericaBlog):
Hadley said Bush was first told in August or September about intelligence indicating Iran had halted its weapons program, but was advised it would take time to evaluate. Vice President Cheney, Hadley and other top officials were briefed the week before last. Intelligence officials formalized their conclusions on Tuesday and briefed Bush the next day.
And yet, it was after Bush got the news that Iran had halted its weapons program that he made that famous comment about World War III (which was on October 17, 2007).

There are no homosexuals in Iran!

I know! Let's send Pat Robertson to live there! Then he'd be out of harm's way! After all, if there are no homosexuals, then the country will be safe from things like earthquakes, tornadoes, terrorist bombings and meteors!

Seriously, though, I hope James Dobson was watching, because now he knows what kind of government and national culture are necessary to "eliminate" homosexuality. And then he can ask himself if that's what he really wants (and can he be proud of the work he's done so far?).
