I have so many questions for Rick Santorum (you don't want separation between church and state? which church? how are you going to feed and care for all the children conceived in a world without birth control? why do you hate college? ... just to scratch the surface), but I think Chris does a good job here of addressing his problems with JFK...

Birth Control and Much More!
Via TGW, the Guttmacher Institute has been tracking the rate of unintended pregnancies in the states and the results are very revealing.
There's so much going on this week, I really can't keep up with it all. Schwarzenegger's in trouble, Rick Santorum's ethics problems continue to mount, and Bush was lying about that 45-day review thing -- the Dubai Ports is actually closing this week according to Deputy Treasury Secretary Robert Kimmitt. Whoops. Silly, silly people. Bush, Inc. isn't going to let the pesky US Congress or the powerless American people get in the way of his wheelin' and dealin'!
A number of people have been covering the ongoing and various stories involving the creeping (or is it creepy?) religious fanaticism here in the US (and how it is often so similar to Islamic fundamentalism), including this week's intrusions into our bedrooms and blurring line between church and state -- and today smijer was able to make that story local for us.
I'm sure there are a lot of Sarah Vowell fans out there. She's been filling in a bit at the NYTimes recently (she weighed in thusly this week), and she made a very charming appearance on Jon Stewart the other day -- here's the clip if you missed the show.
And, well... there are a gigillion other things going on, but that's all the links I've got for now. Give me some tips in the comments if there is some place I should head to next...
According to the latest figures, nearly half of the 6 million pregnancies that occur each year among American women are unintended. Of those, 1.4 million result in births, and 1.3 million result in abortion. Between 1981 and 1994, the latest year for which data are available, the rate of unintended pregnancy in the US declined, from 54.2 per thousand women of child-bearing age to 44.7.Egalia has been putting up more than her usual amount of great stuff over on TN Guerilla Women this week. She's also covered the War on Women, government sponsored homophobia and much, much more.
[...]
Leading the nation in addressing unplanned pregnancies is California, which has the most effective laws and policies promoting the use of contraception, resulting in a nearly 40 percent decline in teen pregnancy, the study found.
Unlike other states, there is at least one family planning clinic in every county in California, the study found. Altogether, there are 821 public clinics that serve more than 1 million women in the state. In 2001, California spent $124 per woman in need of contraceptive services compared with the national rate of $79 per woman.
Nebraska ranked the lowest in the survey, mainly because of lack of access to family planning and lack of public funding, researchers found. Only a quarter of counties in Nebraska have one or more family planning clinic and they serve about a third of women and teenagers in need of contraceptive services, according to the study.

More ports, Fox, Santorum, Harris, Forests and Tunes!
Oh, boy. Turns out this ports scandal is scalable.
When you read the phrase or hear someone say "fair and balanced" in reference to Fox"News," do you laugh or cry? Surely there is no one left on the planet with a cable tv subscription who doesn't believe that Fox is little more than a propoganda arm of the RNC. Well, they've moved the goalposts yet again, folks. Now instead of just reading White House press releases, the Fox "News" team is actively out there campaigning for republican candidates.
And speaking of Santorum, the republican party's paragon of ethical conduct has gotten himself into the kind of trouble that only Tom DeLay (and the uber-sleazy and shameless US Chamber of Commerce) would be proud of. It turns out that besides accepting special treatment at banks, our little Ricky has been lining the pockets of his aides with money that was supposed to go to charities.
But in today's republican party, the sleazoid olympics are only just getting started! The American people are having a hard time deciding if Katherine Harris is really evil or unbelievably stupid, but one thing's for sure: Jeb, Karl, et al are through dealing with this particular campaign bus whore. So much for family values.
Closer to home, Bush wants to sell off some of Tennessee's forests to reduce the deficit. Hey -- here's an idea, George: how about you cut back on the millionaire tax cuts and corporate welfare instead of selling out what little wilderness we have left for a few bucks? What's next? Selling our ports to the highest bidder?
Ooops.
Sigh. Well, just for fun, go see what was Billboard's #1 song on the day you were born, or graduated from high school, or whatever...
UPDATE (Feb. 28th): Well, it looks like the answer in the Katherine Harris conundrum is a) really evil. For b) unbelievably stupid to still be an option, we'd have to upgrade it to stratospheric levels of stupid, since it would seem that ooops, I did it again might be appropriate background music for this revelation:
A United Arab Emirates government-owned company is poised to take over port terminal operations in 21 American ports, far more than the six widely reported. In other news...

But long before any of us had heard of "butterfly ballots" or "hanging chads," Harris was known for something else: accepting illegal campaign contributions. As a candidate for the state Senate in 1994, Harris received more than $20,000 in illegal campaign contributions from an insurance company she subsequently helped by introducing legislation that would have hurt one of its competitors. Harris said back then that she had no idea that the contributions she was getting were illegal, and her office seems to be making a similar suggestion this time around.Stick a fork in her inflatable boobs. I think she's done.

Randomness
Is Lott on his way out? Could he give us a red state pickup? Or is this just his way of pushing the severely weakened Frist aside? Stay tuned...
It's hard to believe, but there actually is a politician out there who is more of a twisted sellout than Bill Frist! No word yet on whether or not Santorum kills kittens.
Closer to home, one of Tennessee's most humiliating citizens is back in the news. Jeff Miller is mad at the press because they reported a true story. Mind you, he admits that he had a girlfriend before his divorce. The supposedly christian, 120% heterosexual Miller does not deny the charges, he's just mad that he was caught (more here). Kinda like the crook in the White House, who isn't sorry that he broke the law, but is mad at the press for letting us citizens know about his transgressions.
Sandy over at hamdems is justifiably mad over Frist's latest moral failing. We can't possibly shake Frist quick enough. There's something that is horribly wrong with the very core of the guy -- perhaps his interest in cardiology was triggered by the realization that he only has a dark, cold, black void where his heart is supposed to be...
On the lighter side... for Angry Alien fans out there, there is now a 30-second Star Wars in the mix! Whee!
And finally (don't go here if you're at work, easily offended, or the kids are looking over your shoulder), why do we even bother with fiction when the truth is so strange?
