Friday Food Photo

This is some food from my early summer trip to Greece, where, of course, the board of fare was incredible. I wish I'd been able to eat more, but there are only so many meals you can eat in a day, especially when the weather is hot and you're on the go all day long.

Happy Friday, everyone! Here in our little corner of Southeast Tennessee, the school buses started to roll just yesterday. If the kids are back to the grind, the weather is supposed to be turning cooler, right?

Bah. No such luck. It still feels like summer here.  :-)

I was about to say that the school year should run just from Labor Day to Memorial Day and the schools should keep their grubby little hands off June, July and August. But then it occurred to me that summer vacations aren't the same now as they were I was a kid, back in the days when we'd run around the neighborhood, ride bikes, go to the library, travel, and have a whole lot of family time. I realized that three months is a long time for our kids to be doing nothing but sitting in a dark room playing video games or watching TV -- and a long time for some of them to go hungry.

Sigh. The more I think about it, the more I feel like I'm in favor of year-round school, with shorter breaks sprinkled throughout the year. After all, when's the last time you saw a kid working on their family's farm during the summer?

Friday Creature

This is what I love about traveling. Never in all the time I've ever been riding along a road in the United States have I ever had to stop my vehicle because someone was moving his herd across my path. But this very thing has happened to me a number of times in Europe -- most recently during this summer's trip to Greece. The European countryside is so much more organic than America's.

Well, it's a holiday weekend, folks -- at least, it is if you're in the States (if not, find a grill and a cold six-pack somewhere, and you can pretend!). I picked up some Link 41 brats at the Farmer's Market this week, so we'll be grilling sausages and veggies on the 4th. I hope you've got some yummy food and fun planned as well! Have a safe holiday, everyone (and don't forget to check out this week's ark)!!

Friday Creature

Whoops. This Friday Creature is brought to you on a Saturday because Friday was nuts. It's a turtle I encountered at the Agora in Athens, and if you look closely, you'll see its little turtle tongue is sticking out!

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone! Check out the ark, have some fun, and try to work in some chillaxing!

UPDATE: Just for fun, here's the same shot, zoomed way in...

Friday Creature

Last week I posted a picture of a sea nettle that I found along the Gulf of Corinth. This week's creature is from the same stop, only this time it's a jellyfish that I found at the water's edge. (When I was a kid and playing on the beach at the Jersey shore, a jellyfish war with my cousins prompted me to learn how to pick one up.)

Have a wonderful weekend! I hope you can find a way to beat the heat! As always, there are creatures on the ark! Stay safe, healthy and happy!

Friday Creature

It. is. so. hot. hot. hot. here in Tennessee. The heat is record-setting for this time in June. And dry. It feels like August, and it's sucking the energy right out of me. Too much too soon.

But I do have memories of the seaside in Greece. I was there in May and while it was hot for part of the trip, in Greece, I could always count on being refreshed by the sea. We stopped one day for a lunch by the water on our way from Nafplion to Delphi and the sea was clear and cool. I found this sea nettle there.

Have a great weekend, everyone! Stay cool and enjoy all the creatures on the modulator's ark!

Friday Creature

It's interesting when visiting countries to observe their attitudes towards different companion animals. In Greece, for example, I saw dogs everywhere -- often riding in the subways with their people. Greek dogs were mostly very well-cared for, too. Spain is another country that displayed a genuine affection for dogs. In Turkey, on the other hand, I didn't see very many dogs at all, but there were cats everywhere (and probably not a lot of rodents anywhere). This week, I'll do the dogs, but the cats are in the cue somewhere.

Have a great weekend, kids! Be safe, well and happy, and as always, check out this week's Friday Ark.
